Biodiversity at Kilkea

Kilkea is home to Ireland's most beautiful wildlife. So why not enjoy one of our walking trails and take in these magnificent creatures. A staff favorite of these is our little family of mute swans named X and Y.
Mute swans are vital ecosystem engineers, playing a significant role in maintaining the health of freshwater habitats. By grazing on submerged aquatic vegetation, they help manage plant density, which prevents overgrowth and promotes nutrient cycling within the water column. Their presence is a key indicator of biodiversity; a thriving swan population often signals a rich, productive wetland capable of supporting a diverse array of insects, fish, and amphibians. Furthermore, their nesting activities create micro-habitats for smaller organisms, and their discarded feathers and waste contribute essential organic matter to the local food web.
