Awarded - Bat friendly Business Gold Award
Ballykilcavan Brewery have been awarded Gold in the Bat Friendly Business Award category for 2027. Their assessment revealed a treasure trove of high quality roosting possibilities for their beloved bats.
Ballykilcavan has put a huge emphasis on caring for nature for generations, and this is reflected in the large number of bats that visit their grounds for vital sustenance before the long hibernation. The assessments carried out by the Irish Nature Awards also found that the brewery is a vital landmark for bats in the wider community because they use the brewery as a point of reference when commuting to and from their homes every night.
Between 5 - 7 different species of bat are visiting the grounds of the brewery every night, making the it a prime location for any bat enthusiasts. In particular, the grounds were found to have a prevalent population of individuals from the Leisler's bat species. This species is in rapid declines across Europe and the Irish population of Leisler's bat belongs to a very special bloodline that is closely related to a even rarer species called the Azores noctule.
